Big Walk

THANK YOU - We hope to see you there next year!
On Sunday October 19, close to 4,500 participants took part in the John Hughes’ Big Walk, which raised a record $140,000 in support of the children’s cancer ward at PMH.
Despite the hot weather, the walkers were all smiles as they warmed up with the team from Fitness First and got underway to plenty of crowd cheers and encouragement from Stitches the Bear.
Participants chose to walk 10km or 17km, with both courses starting and finishing at Burswood Park and winding their way around the Swan River
After the walk, participants celebrated with a Woolworths sausage sizzle and the soothing music of Maera Paki. One lucky entrant also took home a brand new John Hughes’ Hyundai Getz valued at $15,985.
Over the past three years, the John Hughes’ Big Walk has raised over $308,000 in support of the cancer ward at PMH. A big thank you to John Hughes, the Rotary Club of Mosman Park and all our sponsors for their continued support.

TAKE STEPS TO HELP PMH

By taking part in the John Hughes Big Walk, you'll be helping raise funds for vital cancer services at Princess Margaret Hospital. Approximately 80 children in WA are diagnosed with cancer every year. Proceeds will fund an oncology nurse to care for these special children.

This is Laura, the Big Walk’s official ambassador and the happy, smiling face featured in our brochure.

Laura was on holiday in New Zealand in January 2003 when she was first diagnosed with cancer, and due to treatment and surgery she was unable to fly home until November of that year. After a period of remission the cancer returned in February 2005. Laura was in the oncology ward at Princess Margaret Hospital for over a year and didn't go home at all for the first 6 months. This was a very hard time for Laura and her family and it was made more difficult by the fact that they live in country WA.

But the good news is, Laura is now in remission and is the healthiest she’s been in years. She is back at school and enjoying all the things she used to. Laura still visits PMH for regular check-ups and scans and will be helped by the late-effects nurse funded by this year's John Hughes' Big Walk.
